Performance Psychology & Relationship Coaching
Performance. Relationships. Purpose.
Hello! I’m Dr. Kelly Furr
Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision
Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC)
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
What is my expertise in working with athletes?
I have experience working with professional, collegiate, high school, and youth athletes. I am a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). I have a Ph.D. in Counseling Education and Supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University, where my dissertation focused on athlete identity and how it relates to body appreciation and psychological flourishing in middle-aged former collegiate athletes. I earned a master’s degree in Family Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I work with many high-achieving athletes and clients who are achievement-oriented and want to learn sport and performance psychology techniques to improve their performance in competition and stay connected to why they love their sport. I help athletes learn and implement evidence-based techniques to strengthen their romantic relationships so that their personal life is a source of stability rather than distraction. I work with tactical populations (military, law enforcement) and other professionals working in high-demand fields (medicine, law, corporate leadership) to learn and implement these same skills related to performance and relationships. I also work with the romantic partners of athletes and people in high-demand careers who want to stay connected to their own identity and purpose and improve their romantic relationship while operating in a supportive role.
Personally, I have been involved in athletics all my life. I competed in gymnastics throughout my youth. In college, I competed for Penn State and Brigham Young University as a pole vaulter and hurdler, setting school records and competing at the highest levels in the NCAA. I trained post-collegiately for a while after having my first child. I have many years of experience being a gymnastics and pole vault coach, and I have three kids of my own who are involved in scholastic sports and theater. Throughout my athletic career, I have been blessed by excellent coaches who made training a positive part of my life. I currently participate in master’s athletics in gymnastics, track, and Olympic weightlifting.
My experience as a top athlete, coach, parent, and therapist makes me uniquely suited to work with you as a consultant to help you gain insight into how to improve your mental game to optimize your performance, and how to strengthen your relationship to build the life you want. I am aware that being an athlete is just one of many intersectional identities that you have. Other parts of yourself such as your gender or sexual identity, religious identity, and racial or cultural identity are likely highly relevant to the way you operate in the world, and we can talk about how this may be relevant to your goals during consultation sessions.
I help athletes build the life they want by improving mental performance and relationship skills so that they can improve their sport performance and enjoy life more. Athlete Mental Wellness is an online practice which means you can access confidential consultation services at your convenience. It’s never been easier to receive support from the comfort of your home.
My Consultation Approach
First and foremost, consultation is not therapy. Consultation does not involve treating diagnosable mental health conditions. However, therapeutic techniques that work on large issues can also work on smaller issues.
Here are some of the research-based modalities that inform my consultation practice:
- Sport and performance psychology
- Cognitive-behavioral techniques
- Research by the Gottman Institute for relationship coaching
- Systems theory
Many people want help with a temporary or situational issue that may be resolved in a handful of sessions. Others find that having an ongoing relationship with a trusted consultant over the course of their career is a vital part of their performance plan.
I will work with you to accomplish goals related to your performance and relationships. With a professional balance of compassion, psycho-education, and light-heartedness, you might even find performance consulting to be a fun experience!
